Black Kitchens Are Here To Stay

Black isn’t always the first colour that comes to the forefront of the mind when planning a kitchen. Quite often it can be deemed too dark and not the typical, light and airy kitchen. However, black and darker greys are certainly having their moment in the interior world. From the blackest black to graphite grey, the dark kitchen trend is here to stay.

Here at The Main Company, we love a black kitchen. Whether it’s ceiling to floor cabinetry or just incorporating black using a feature island alongside another shade such as dove grey or navy, we believe black is a versatile and classy choice and one that is certainly worth considering when designing your dream kitchen.

The beauty of a dark kitchen is that you can make it as traditional or as contemporary as you wish, by changing even the simplest of things. From handless doors, to a more classic shaker style, there are so many options that our designers can talk you through.

As you will already know, here at The Main Company we are passionate about reclaimed materials. Black often works beautifully with reclaimed wood, whether it’s a warmer plank or a cooler tone, quite often black really brings out the texture and patina of the wood. If you’re not sure about incorporating reclaimed wood, black also works beautifully with other reclaimed materials such as copper and concrete. Using these materials can help add texture to your space and create the perfect balance between light and dark.

All of our kitchens are bespoke and our on-site designers work with you to create exactly what you want and make the most of your space available. At The Main Company we create your perfect kitchen then finish with high quality paints such as Little Greene Company and Farrow & Ball.

Which Black Kitchen Colour Should I Choose?

If you’re thinking of a black or darker kitchen, a few cabinetry shades to consider are;

Little Greene Paint – Lamp Black
Little Greene Paint – Jack Black
Little Greene Paint – Basalt
Farrow & Ball – Downpipe

Take a look at these recent Main Company projects for some inspiration…

Inspiration #1 – Berkshire

Our bespoke Berkshire kitchen was finished in a dramatic dark and whitewash pine, creating a truly stunning kitchen. Set in an open plan living space, the kitchen was paired with white walls and a pale grey stone floor. The pewter fittings and the reclaimed wood used on the breakfast bar helped to tie the look together. As you can see below, the homeowners have complemented the kitchen with warmer tones, creating a warm and welcoming space.

Inspiration #2 – Portobello

Bespoke kitchen island painted in Little Greene Lamp Black with stainless steel worktop

This industrial style kitchen features shaker style cabinetry that has been finished with paint from the Little Greene Paint Company. The kitchen sits in a light and airy room, with exposed brick and white walls, really making the kitchen pop. The cabinets have been finished with both stainless steel and reclaimed oak worktops, creating a vintage feel.

If you’re not quite ready to make a statement with an all-black kitchen, there’s plenty of other ways to incorporate black into your kitchen space. You can use black handles (we have used some lovely ones from Buster + Punch in our London Showroom) throughout your kitchen. Or, keep it simple with a black worktop or you could even introduce black through your fixtures and fittings, like this Quooker tap.
