At The Main Company, we’ve created highly individual bespoke kitchens full of personality and unique style since the seventies. Our family-run business, known for its inspirational projects and products, seamlessly blends traditional and modern designs. Every project is handmade by our master craftsmen in our North Yorkshire workshops, using various authentic materials to create truly bespoke looks. One of our latest projects, Bespoke Kitchen Project 60 – Putney, exemplifies our commitment to quality and design.
Conceptualisation and Collaboration
Bespoke Kitchen Project 60 in Putney represents a seamless convergence of rugged, industrial aesthetics and refined design. This project features exposed walls, wood cabinets, and concrete worktops, showcasing our take on minimalistic design. Working alongside the talented team at Vatraa Architecture, who designed the kitchen, was an absolute pleasure. Their vision for a textured, industrial-style kitchen resonated deeply with our design philosophy.
The textured exposed walls served as the perfect canvas for this kitchen, embracing imperfections and adding character to the space. The design process began with understanding the client’s vision and requirements. We believe in creating kitchens that look stunning, are highly functional, and are tailored to the client’s lifestyle.
Craftsmanship and Materials
The wood cabinets, carefully hand-finished in our Yorkshire workshop, stand as the focal point of the kitchen, infusing the space with warmth. The wood used in this project is our stained engineered oak, known for its durability and rich texture. The choice of timber was crucial in achieving the desired aesthetic and functionality. Each piece of wood was meticulously selected and treated to meet our high standards.
The concrete worktops introduce an industrial edge that complements the raw nature of the surroundings. The excellent, sleek concrete juxtaposed against the warmth of the wood cabinets establishes a captivating visual balance. The concrete surfaces were custom-made to fit the specific dimensions of the kitchen, ensuring a perfect fit and flawless finish.
Design Philosophy and Details
This kitchen’s design philosophy emphasises simplicity and functionality. With open shelving, everyday essentials can be stored and displayed in an aesthetic manner. As a result, the client’s carefully chosen kitchenware becomes part of the decor, creating an atmosphere that is both inviting and effortlessly chic.
Innovative in its design, the cabinets are handleless. Small nooks strategically placed provide a grip that is both practical and stylish. This subtle detail enhances the overall aesthetic while maintaining the clean lines and minimalistic charm. The handleless design not only adds to the modern look of the kitchen but also ensures ease of use.
Integration and Modern Technology
We chose Fisher and Paykel for the integrated refrigerator and oven and Elica for the sleek Nikola Tesla stove. With its built-in extractor, this hob was ideal for a modern home like this, as it avoids the bulky look of a hood above the hob. Including modern appliances in the kitchen enhances functionality and convenience by providing the latest technology.
Breaking Traditional Barriers
The design breaks down traditional barriers by blurring the lines between the cooking and dining spaces. The fluidity between the kitchen and dining enhances the overall functionality and sociability of the space. This open-plan design encourages interaction and makes the kitchen the heart of the home, where family and friends can gather and enjoy meals together.
