Island Life with The Main Company

As the centrepiece of your kitchen, introducing an island not only helps to define the layout but also provides plenty of extra worktop space for cooking, entertaining and enjoying everyday life in the kitchen.

Perfect for informal dining, including an island in your kitchen creates the ever-important option of a breakfast bar. Providing a place to sit and gather after a long day, breakfast bars are ideal for everything from that first cup of coffee in the morning to grabbing lunch on the go and socialising as a family over dinner. As the ultimate multitasker, the island in your kitchen not only introduces a place to dine but also has the option to include a range of storage solutions, as well as appliances and even space for the sink. For a little inspiration, read on to discover a few of our favourite islands, as featured in our latest kitchen projects…

The Weybridge Island

The island in our Weybridge kitchen project is the perfect example of hardworking design. Positioned close to the cooker, the quartz worktop allows for plenty of prep space, whilst built-in storage throughout allows the worktops to be kept clear. Slatted wood shelves at either end create a stylish display and are accompanied by cutlery/utensil drawers and open shelving with space for storing chopping boards, pots and pans and even the microwave.

The Moor Green Island

Embracing the open-plan layout, we designed a long island in our Moor Green project to ensure a smooth transition between the separate areas of the kitchen. With space for three barstools and integrated cupboards and drawers, the Moor Green island combines relaxed dining with a focus on practicality and organisation. One of our favourite bespoke details is the inclusion of small wooden shelves, designed to store the homeowner’s collection of spices.

The Cattal Street Island

A multi-functional style statement, the island of our Cattal Street kitchen makes the most of the large open-plan kitchen and living space. Celebrating rustic materials with state-of-the-art finishes; the island combines beautifully textured reclaimed wood with concrete shelving units and a sleek stainless steel surface and sink. From the barn breakfast bar to concrete shelves displaying a collection of ceramics, every element of this kitchen is personalised to the homeowner’s unique sense of style.

The Hertfordshire Island

As the centrepiece of the kitchen, the island in our Hertfordshire project commands attention whilst helping to maintain the open-plan layout. Featuring chic Shaker-style cabinetry in deep midnight blue, the worktop provides an element of contrast, whilst stainless steel accents create a contemporary finish. With plenty of room for a breakfast bar, as well as numerous cupboards and drawers, the Hertfordshire island ensures a place for everything.
