One of our most unique projects to date, two houseboats transformations in the Netherlands. This marks the first time we’ve ventured into designing a floating home, and the result is a stunning example of how thoughtful design and wood finishes can completely transform a space.
For Henk, we chose to used Washed Mill Board similar to The Old White Mill Board across most of the boat, creating a cohesive and airy feel throughout. The flooring and wall cladding in the living area and bedroom maintain a seamless flow, enhancing the sense of space, a crucial consideration in compact living environments like houseboats.
In the living area, a booth-style table adds a cosy yet functional dining space, paired beautifully with a single-wall kitchen that keeps the layout open and uncluttered. The light wood tones amplify the natural light streaming in from the large windows and skylight, making the space feel expansive and inviting. To break the monotony of the design, we played with the wood patterns. Parquet flooring adds visual interest, while the wall cladding features in a plank format ties the whole look together.
For Galgenbrug, we opted for a darker wood finish, Distressed Charcoal Mill Board. This choice created a completely different ambiance, exuding a moody and intimate feel as opposed to the light and airy atmosphere Henk. The darker wood adds depth and a sense of sophistication, proving how versatile wood can be in setting the tone of a space. These two projects beautifully illustrate how the choice of finish can transform not just the look but also the feel of a room, proving that design goes beyond aesthetics to shape a space’s atmosphere.
