As a general rule, we tell people to give at least a space of 600mm for each place. For a more comfortable fit, 750mm would be better, or if you’re struggling you could get away with 500mm. It’s important not to forget about moving chairs in and out, for this we suggest leaving 900mm around the perimeter of any table (don’t forget to take this into account when measuring your space!)
Dining Table Size Guide
The table size guide below is just a rough idea for you to work out how many guests you may be able to fit in your space. All our tables are hand-made in Yorkshire to any size you require. Quite often the dining chairs you select can dictate the overall table size.

Round Tables
A round table can provide a better use of space in smaller areas. They are also a perfect shape for social events as everyone is facing inwards. Unlike square and rectangular tables, a round table design lends itself to squeezing that additional guest in! We tend to advise a maximum diameter of 1500mm.
Square Tables
For smaller spaces or occasional seating, square tables are a perfect choice. They offer a balanced look if you do happen to have a square dining room. You’ll often see square tables in cafe and restaurant settings as they can be combined to make a long rectangular table.
Rectangular Tables
Without a doubt, rectangular tables are still the most popular choice of shape for a dining table. If your room is either long and narrow, or you’ve got plenty of space to play with, rectangular dining tables are the choice for you. They are great for entertaining large groups of people and can also be configured so that they are extendable. We’ve made extending tables with leaves that go on the end or in the center of the table giving room for those extra guests.
