Open plan light blue kitchen with farmhouse table and cream sofa

Bespoke Kitchen Project 21 - Northallerton

Blue hues and rustic reclaimed materials are the real focal points in this newly refurbished North Yorkshire kitchen by The Main Company. Embracing the rural surroundings of this unique property, the owner of this former coach house undertook a complete conversion of the Georgian structure to create a well-insulated home with an open-plan ground floor and a new mezzanine level. Original beams and steel supports were retained for a sense of traditional character.

At the hub of the home, the bespoke Shaker kitchen overlooks the living area with bi-fold doors opening into the garden – in keeping with the history of the coach house. Painted in Farrow & Ball’s stunning Chinese Blue and Pointing, the cabinetry features a mix of traditional kitchen units and more modern open shelving. As an alternative to paint, the homeowner used a clay plaster finish in a smooth, matt-white colour for a simple yet warm backdrop, which adds to the relaxed feel of the room.

To add more character, and to contrast with the Westminster White quartz worktop, the homeowner chose a zinc island top that will develop a beautiful grey-blue patina designed to improve with age. The Everhot range cooker features a concealed hood, next to the sink, while all the food storage is conveniently located opposite along one wall. The kitchen island bridges the two sides and effectively hides the dishwasher. The farmhouse style dining table provides a natural extension of the island and is a central hub for eating, along with the antique chairs.

The finer details of this bespoke kitchen really add to the relaxed, country feel to its interior. A large butler sink, statement pendant lighting and traditional wood burning stove provide the perfect finishing touches to this rustic space. Classic country design is fused with contemporary style, and clean lines are juxtaposed with quirky furniture pieces, to create this beautiful unique space.

Let us not forget the stunning flooring we installed in this impressive space. Our Engineered Pinewood Studio Millboard is a brilliant option to add a rustic, warm feel to your interior. The deep rich brown colour is contrasted beautifully by the the bold darker grain and markings. This flooring adds so much character to the kitchen and looks so stylish combined with the clean blue painted cabinetry.
