What is a hygge kitchen?

A simple answer to this question is: A modern rustic cosy kitchen with lots of wood, warmth, and texture best describes a hygge kitchen. Let’s have a look at elements that you can introduce into your kitchen space to get that hygge feel.

1. Natural Light

Artificial light can create that hygge ambience in the evening but don’t forget to take advantage of natural light where you can. Large Velux windows or patio doors allow light to flood your kitchen space casting shadows and creating an ever-changing cosy environment.

2. Warm Colours

From kitchen cabinets, walls, and even ceilings you will most likely have some colour in your kitchen. Try and keep colours to a minimum by using off white and more neutral colours. If you do want to introduce a bit of colour make sure to do this with subtle pastel colours.

3. Rustic Textures

Rustic textures are second nature here at The Main Company. We use reclaimed timber throughout our bespoke kitchen designs, naturally creating that hygge environment. This is often combined with natural stone and fibers to give your kitchen space that warm hygge feel.

4. Simple Design

Hygge is a Danish concept of cosiness and togetherness. This is why simple design goes hand in hand with its Scandinavian roots. Keeping things simple doesn’t mean you need a plain white kitchen, it’s more understanding that everything has a purpose.

5. Outside In

One of our favourite things about indoor plants is that they provide a much-needed connection to the outdoors. We often spend months working and living stuck inside. Connecting with nature seems very hygge to us and is probably why so many hygge style kitchens have numerous plants.
