How to Extend the Lifespan of Your Kitchen

At The Main Company, we have been designing and crafting bespoke kitchens for over four decades. With our expertise in high-quality materials and fine furniture finishing, we know that a well-designed kitchen should not only look beautiful but also stand the test of time. A kitchen is one of the most used spaces in any home, and with the right care and maintenance, it can remain functional and stylish for decades. Here are our expert tips on how to extend the lifespan of your kitchen.

Choose High-Quality Materials from the Start

The key to a long-lasting kitchen begins with the right materials. When planning a renovation or new design, invest in durable, high-quality components:

  • Solid Wood Cabinetry – Unlike MDF or particle board, solid wood offers superior longevity and resilience.
  • Quartz or Natural Stone Worktops – These are more resistant to scratches, heat, and stains compared to laminate surfaces.
  • High-Quality Hardware – Soft-close hinges and drawer runners reduce wear and tear, ensuring smooth operation for years.

By selecting premium materials, you can minimise the need for frequent repairs or replacements.

Regular Cleaning and Maintenance

Consistent upkeep can prevent long-term damage to your kitchen surfaces and fittings:

  • Worktops – Wipe down daily with a mild cleaner suitable for your surface type. Avoid abrasive chemicals that can dull or damage finishes.
  • Cabinetry – Use a damp cloth with a gentle wood cleaner. Regularly check for moisture damage, especially around sinks and dishwashers.
  • Appliances – Clean filters, coils, and seals periodically to maintain efficiency and prevent breakdowns.
  • Flooring – Sweep and mop regularly to prevent scratches from debris and spills from staining.

Protect Your Worktops from Damage

Your kitchen worktops endure a lot of daily use, so protecting them is crucial:

  • Use Cutting Boards – Never cut directly on stone or wooden surfaces to prevent scratches and stains.
  • Always Use Trivets – Placing hot pots and pans directly on worktops can cause heat damage or discolouration.
  • Seal Natural Stone – If you have granite or marble surfaces, ensure they are resealed periodically to prevent stains and moisture absorption.

Prevent Water Damage

Water is one of the biggest threats to kitchen longevity, especially for wooden cabinetry and flooring. To prevent water-related issues:

  • Check for Leaks – Regularly inspect under sinks, dishwashers, and around taps for any signs of leakage.
  • Use Splashbacks – Installing splash-backs behind sinks and cooking areas protects walls from water and grease damage.
  • Wipe Up Spills Promptly – Standing water can seep into cabinetry and cause swelling or warping.

Be Mindful of Heat and Humidity

Excessive heat and humidity can negatively impact your kitchen’s materials over time. To manage this:

  • Use an Extractor Fan – A good-quality range hood helps reduce moisture and grease buildup in the air.
  • Avoid Direct Sunlight Exposure – Prolonged sun exposure can fade wooden cabinetry and stone worktops. Consider UV-filtering blinds or curtains.
  • Keep Your Oven & Stove Well-Ventilated – Heat from appliances can affect surrounding cabinetry; ensure proper spacing and ventilation.

Upgrade and Refresh Over Time

Even with the best materials and care, your kitchen may need small updates to keep it looking and functioning at its best:

  • Refinish or Paint Cabinets – Instead of replacing cabinetry, a professional refinishing or repainting job can refresh the look.
  • Replace Worktops or Handles – Swapping out worktops or upgrading hardware can give your kitchen a fresh, modern feel without a full remodel.
  • Update Lighting – Adding new lighting fixtures or under-cabinet lighting can enhance the space with minimal effort.

What is a bespoke kitchen?

A bespoke kitchen is one that is custom-made and is unique from client to client. Incorporating both traditional and modern design, each and every project is handmade by The Main Company’s master craftsmen in our North Yorkshire workshops, using a range of authentic materials to create a truly bespoke look. Bespoke is at the core of everything we do, we don’t use set sizes, everything we make is unique, full of character and made exclusively for our customer. With this in mind, we thought we would share with you a little blog post about what it means to have a bespoke kitchen made by us.

3. How can I make my kitchen bespoke?

A kitchen that is tailor-made to fit you, your space and needs, is a bespoke kitchen. Your project can be as bespoke as you would like It to be. We receive a range of requests, from tailor made country classic kitchens to modern, quirky and industrial styles. For some, bespoke could be embracing more of a ‘rustic’ style to a kitchen, for instance if you look at our Cornwall project. Bespoke could be the choice to have a kitchen bar area that perfectly fits within the space you need it to fit, to compliment your bespoke country kitchen – take a look at our Cranleigh kitchen.

Top 5 Interior Design Trends in 2023

Interior design trends are constantly evolving, with each year bringing new ideas and styles to the forefront. In recent years, we’ve seen a shift towards more natural and organic elements, as well as a focus on sustainability and minimalism. Bold colours and patterns are also making a comeback, with designers incorporating bright statement pieces creating focal points in spaces.

As we bid farewell to the trends that defined 2023, we find ourselves at the threshold of a new era, ready to embrace the innovations and inspirations that 2024 holds. But before we dive into the future, let’s take a moment to reflect on the best trends that left an indelible mark on the year gone by.

Earthy Tones

Taking inspiration from rich terracotta, or the several hues of crisp fall leaves we have descended into the era of earthy tones. Earthy tones have become a popular choice for designers looking to create a warm and inviting atmosphere in their spaces. These colours are inspired by nature and evoke a sense of tranquility, calmness, and relaxation. This is one of our favourite interior design trends for the year, we have incorporated earthy tones in several projects recently and cant to wait to share them all soon!

Natural Stone

Rose pink Lacanche in the top trends of 2023

A striking statement piece in any space is undoubtedly a natural stone feature, whether it’s a countertop or backsplash it is sure to make a statement! From marble to slate, natural stone adds a sense of luxury and elegance to any space. Given natural stone’s durability, it is more a of timeless trend which has been around for decades now.

Biophilic Design

Biophilia is an emerging trend in the field of interior design that emphasises a connection to nature. It involves incorporating natural elements such as plants, water, and natural light into interior spaces to create a more calming, welcoming environment. Biophilic design also seeks to incorporate natural patterns and textures, such as wood grain and stone, into the design of buildings and furniture. Our wide range of reclaimed wood is the perfect start to a biophilic design project!

Statement Appliances

Statement appliances are becoming increasingly popular. Appliances that go beyond the typical stainless steel or white finishes and make a bold statement in kitchens. Statement appliances can range from bright and bold colours to unique shapes and designs that catch the eye. We love experimenting with bright classic ranges from Lacanche, they are a great way to create a focal point!

Minimal Shelving

minimal floating shelves in kitchen

Minimal shelving emphasises simplicity and functionality in interior design. The goal is to create an uncluttered and visually appealing space by using minimalistic shelving that blends seamlessly with its surrounding. This can be achieved through the use of simple and clean lines, neutral colours, and the absence of ornate details. Minimal shelving is also practical as it allows for easy access and organisation of items on the shelves. The shelves can be used to display decorative items, books, or everyday objects, a great way to personalise your home!

The Brief

Our First Meeting

Toni from Deli Med, Toni Cakes and More and Meat Me Wrap Me, what a character.

You would think he is Italian, he is actually Swiss, so change your concept immediately of the Swiss apparent reserve after meeting him, absolutely not reserved, completely driven by passion, such passion for food and taste, image, pleasure for consumer experience,  motivated by being bigger, better and tastier than any competitor.

Toni normally has a stand at any given show in the UK, from Suffolk Show to the Great Yorkshire Show and that is where he literally tripped over us in 2015. We have a large stand on a prime location at The Great Yorkshire Show and Toni, rushed by on a mission, who was caught short by the ‘Bistro Table’ at the front of our stand, he actually stopped in his tracks. The rest is history.

The Bistro Table that started everything!

The ensuing times we communicated were both in a variety of mediums and also locations.

Take the napkin drawings at a motorway service station, unfortunately northbound and southbound not understood. The various meetings at Carluccio’s in the Milton Keynes Shopping Centre, spreading plans across the table for hours and only drinking one expresso. The meetings at our showrooms in North Yorkshire, more drawings on paper bags this time, but closer each time to the end goal.

Fresh coffee and note book in a cafe

In the interim we designed a unit at the bottom of an escalator, this included a real work of art for the Deli Med logo in steel. This did not proceed as the Shopping Centre management chose another company to have the location.

We created many CAD drawings and Sketch Up drawings to get to the end result, it was a long process, we absorb these costs as we believe our customers are loyal and also innocent to the amount of work created in the lead up to the end result, the finale and complete satisfaction of a job very well done.

What was that end goal?

Sublime and sinking into a restful area in an otherwise hectic Shopping Centre delivering an excellent experience in take away gastronomy coupled with a space allowing communication, charging of phones and personal contact, a drink both alcoholic and not and sustaining food.

Toni is both generous in his character as he is in his portions; this is where he stands out in any show. We needed to work with the companies he chose for the refrigeration units needed for the display of his amazing display. This was a complex process but we did achieve the end result.

Fitting the last unit in the Milton Keynes Centre was as interesting as the first, working overnight from 8pm to 8am was brutal, this lasted for 2 days. The fitters had jet lag for a long time after the fit, it is a really hard installation.

Our Reclaimed Douglas Fir Flooring Collection

Our Reclaimed Douglas Fir Flooring Collection

Reclaimed Flooring – Douglas Fir

We’re really proud to be able to present our full collection of Reclaimed Douglas Fir Flooring. From a rustic Charcoal, with a combination of honey, auburn and black tones. To Nordic White, a beautiful whitewashed Douglas Fir. Whatever your interior project, our colour palette will have something to complement.

What is Douglas Fir?

It’s an evergreen conifer, native to western North America. Part of the pine family it can live for more than 1000 years. It’s one of the most popular choices in commercial projects. Used to make beams, veneers, furniture, cladding, and flooring.

All of our Douglass Fir timber has been acquired from old mills. When a mill is being demolished we salvage timber beams. These wood beams are then machined to make all of our Reclaimed Douglas Fir Flooring Collection.

Why Purchase Reclaimed Douglas Fir?

Reclaimed Douglas Fir has been seasoned for 50-120 years which allows the timber to gain a great depth of colouration. The age of the timber also means it is harder, stronger and more stable than newly harvested Douglas Fir. The reclaimed timbers are environmentally friendly as well as individual characteristic running throughout each plank such as bolt and nail holes which makes each piece of timber truly unique.

The Technical Bits

All of our Douglas Fir flooring is manufactured on site in our Yorkshire workshops. This gives us maximum control when producing your floor. The majority of or collection is finished with a raw lacquer, giving the flooring an unfinished and natural look. A lacquer sits on top of the wood surface providing protection, yet is low maintenance.

The Reclaimed Douglas Fir Flooring collection is all priced as an engineered product. The Douglas Fir is machined to 6mm(+/-0.5mm) and then engineered on to a 15mm birch plywood. This creates an extremely stable product, making it suitable to use with under floor heating systems. That said, if you require your flooring to be solid, this can be accommodated.

With all reclaimed products, no two pieces are the same. This means that each board length can vary. On average the boards are 1600mm, but please bear in mind they can be anywhere from 400mm up to 2450mm.

Please note that our flooring is a natural product. The colour, grain knots and markings will vary from batch to batch, as well as from one plank to another. This makes our flooring a truly unique natural product.

We’ve been lucky enough to supply our Douglas Fir Flooring to numerous projects around the UK. A firm favourite has been Nordic White, supplied to one of our kitchen clients. If you would like to see the full project it’s Bespoke Kitchen Project 25.
