Buying an ex-display kitchen is one of the smartest ways to get exceptional craftsmanship at a lower price point. But it does require you to consider fixed layouts and dimensions.
Here’s how to know if an ex-display kitchen will fit your space and what to consider before committing.
Start With Your Measurements
It’s easy to fall for a kitchen before you’ve checked whether it can fit in your home.
Before you visit a showroom or browse listings, measure your space properly. Including the room dimensions, ceiling height, window positions, door swings and any alcoves or chimney breasts that will dictate where units can and can’t go.
Note the exact location of your water supply, waste pipes and electrical sockets too, because these will determine how much flexibility you have with layout.
When you’re looking at an ex-display kitchen, you need to know the total run of cabinetry, the depth of the units, and crucially, whether the layout can be reconfigured.
Consider the Layout
It’s also worth thinking about the layout; a kitchen that’s close to the right size could be reconfigured to work in your room. A U-shaped showroom display may become an L-shape or a galley.
It’s also worth knowing that most ex-display kitchens can be extended. If the run of cabinetry falls a little short of your wall length, additional units or doors can often be ordered. Where that’s not possible, filler panels, end panels and matching plinths can bridge the gap.
Even when a kitchen is reconfigured, a well-planned layout can keep your white goods within easy reach of each other.
Plan for the Worktops
Solid worktops such as stone, quartz or solid wood can almost always be adapted, so don’t rule out a kitchen purely because of the worktops.
Although it’s worth factoring templating, transport and refabrication into your budget from the start.
Look at the Quality
An ex-display kitchen has been in a showroom and lived with to some degree. A well-maintained display kitchen is still in far better condition than second-hand, but it does mean looking closely when you visit.
Check the hinges and soft-close mechanisms on the doors and drawers. Look at how the worktop meets the wall and how the interior of the cabinets has been finished. Minor surface wear is normal and usually fine. With appliances, it’s worth confirming their age and whether any manufacturer warranty remains.
