London Latest: The Showroom Kitchen Has Arrived

If you didn’t know already we’re opening a London Showroom! In my previous post we looked at the reclaimed flooring to be installed on the floor and also the products that will be on display.

This is the entrance to the showroom, taken just before we laid our reclaimed flooring. Reclaimed Engineered Burnt Silver Barn Bricks were laid in the entrance. This is a new product which will be uploaded to our website shortly. The rest of the showroom, where the bespoke kitchen will sit has been laid with Reclaimed Weathered Barn Oak.

This week we’ve pushed the showroom even closer to the finish line with the delivery and initial installation of the bespoke kitchen. This process is exactly the same as if it were your own kitchen. All the bespoke cabinets arrive pre-assembled from our Yorkshire workshops so the first job for the joiners is to unload the van!

The Kitchen Installation Begins…

The tall bespoke unit above will house an integrated Yorkshire workshops fridge freezer, bespoke larder unit and a pair of custom made black steel crittall style doors. We chose one of our favourite colours for the painted cabinetry: Little Greene’s Lamp Black.

Here’s a glimpse of the large kitchen island. You may recognise it slightly as the showroom has many elements from our much loved Cornwall project. We want our showroom to replicate that open-plan space which we design for on a daily basis. It gives us the opportunity to display a stunning kitchen where timeless painted shaker meets reclaimed and rustic.

These rustic pan drawers will be topped with a solid concrete worktop and sit beside a stainless steel Lacanche range cooker. Do you think we went for a classic or modern?!

Sometimes it’s the small details in a design that can make a big difference. As odd as it sounds, we don’t want our new showroom to look new. Reclaimed and rustic is what we’re about. We’ve added elements like this faux rustic beam throughout the showroom interior to make it look more original and like we’ve always been there.

The Finish Line is in Sight!

As the finish line approaches here’s a peek at the full kitchen layout. Broken down we have three main sections: Tall Run, Range Run, and Island. We looked at the tall run above with the integrated Fisher & Paykel fridge freezer. The Range Run incorporates a Lacanche Range Cooker with engineered pan drawers to the left and right. The Island is a real statement mixing concrete, reclaimed timber, painted cabinets and stainless steel.

Reclaimed Flooring for our London Showroom

There are two elements to consider when it comes to our flooring in our new London showroom: Which samples boards to present customers with and which flooring to lay?

Before we consider these two though, I thought it would be nice to take a quick look at how we actually obtain and then process our reclaimed timber for our engineered flooring.

It all starts with the demolition of old mills and barns. Through our timber merchants, we manage to get some incredible wood from all over the world. You can be assured that when you purchase a reclaimed product it’s truly unique to you.

Once the timber has been de-nailed, cleaned and re-sawn it’s ready to be cold pressed on to birch plywood. This makes an incredibly stable product which is easy to lay and is compatible with under floor heating systems.

Once our reclaimed engineered flooring has been machined with tongue & groove and then end matched it’s time for the finish. Due to the natural undulation in many of the reclaimed timbers, the only way to get a high quality finish is to apply the lacquer by hand. As you can imagine this is a very time consuming and labour intensive process.

As you can see above the final boards look amazing. From start to finish it takes days for a board to be processed.

Now we’ve had a look at how our reclaimed flooring is processed, let’s get back to where we started: Which samples boards should we present to customers in London? Which flooring products should we lay?

Which flooring to lay in the London Showroom?

We’ve actually chosen two products! In the entrance we have a brand new product, Reclaimed Engineered Burnt Silver Barn Bricks (see above). These will be uploaded to our website very soon so watch this space. The rest of the showroom will have our Reclaimed Weathered Barn Oak. This flooring features in our Cornwall project and is a firm favourite. We can’t wait to share the pictures with you once has been laid!

Which samples boards to present customers?

There’s space for 32 sample boards in the London Showroom. This sounds a lot but once you break it up in to reclaimed flooring, new flooring, and cladding we have to make sure we select products people would like to see there!

We’re currently focusing on our most popular products like Reclaimed Douglas Fir Nordic White Flooring and Reclaimed Heritage Oak Distressed Charcoal Flooring while also manufacturing new ones with selected batches of reclaimed timber. The Deli Med Journey : Meat Me Wrap Me Bistro

The Brief

Jamie Oliver in feel, rustic reclaimed, very rubbed back paint finishes, mixed materials, functional for staff movement and work processes, comfortable but not for too long for customers, and to stand out as completely different from anything or anyone else.

Our First Meeting

Toni from Deli Med, Toni Cakes and More and Meat Me Wrap Me, what a character.

You would think he is Italian, he is actually Swiss, so change your concept immediately of the Swiss apparent reserve after meeting him, absolutely not reserved, completely driven by passion, such passion for food and taste, image, pleasure for consumer experience, motivated by being bigger, better and tastier than any competitor.

Toni normally has a stand at any given show in the UK, from Suffolk Show to the Great Yorkshire Show and that is where he literally tripped over us in 2015. We have a large stand on a prime location at The Great Yorkshire Show and Toni, rushed by on a mission, who was caught short by the ‘Bistro Table’ at the front of our stand, he actually stopped in his tracks. The rest is history.

The ensuing times we communicated were both in a variety of mediums and also locations.

Take the napkin drawings at a motorway service station, unfortunately northbound and southbound not understood. The various meetings at Carluccio’s in the Milton Keynes Shopping Centre, spreading plans across the table for hours and only drinking one expresso. The meetings at our showrooms in North Yorkshire, more drawings on paper bags this time, but closer each time to the end goal.

In the interim we designed a unit at the bottom of an escalator, this included a real work of art for the Deli Med logo in steel. This did not proceed as the Shopping Centre management chose another company to have the location.

We created many CAD drawings and Sketch Up drawings to get to the end result, it was a long process, we absorb these costs as we believe our customers are loyal and also innocent to the amount of work created in the lead up to the end result, the finale and complete satisfaction of a job very well done.

What was that end goal?

Sublime and sinking into a restful area in an otherwise hectic Shopping Centre delivering an excellent experience in take away gastronomy coupled with a space allowing communication, charging of phones and personal contact, a drink both alcoholic and not and sustaining food.

Toni is both generous in his character as he is in his portions; this is where he stands out in any show. We needed to work with the companies he chose for the refrigeration units needed for the display of his amazing display. This was a complex process but we did achieve the end result.

Fitting the last unit in the Milton Keynes Centre was as interesting as the first, working overnight from 8pm to 8am was brutal, this lasted for 2 days. The fitters had jet lag for a long time after the fit, it is a really hard installation.

Our Reclaimed Douglas Fir Flooring Collection

Reclaimed Flooring – Douglas Fir

We’re really proud to be able to present our full collection of Reclaimed Douglas Fir Flooring. From a rustic Charcoal, with a combination of honey, auburn and black tones. To Nordic White, a beautiful whitewashed Douglas Fir. Whatever your interior project, our colour palette will have something to complement.

What is Douglas Fir?

It’s an evergreen conifer, native to western North America. Part of the pine family it can live for more than 1000 years. It’s one of the most popular choices in commercial projects. Used to make beams, veneers, furniture, cladding, and flooring.

All of our Douglass Fir timber has been acquired from old mills. When a mill is being demolished we salvage timber beams. These wood beams are then machined to make all of our Reclaimed Douglas Fir Flooring Collection.

Why Purchase Reclaimed Douglas Fir?

Reclaimed Douglas Fir has been seasoned for 50-120 years which allows the timber to gain a great depth of colouration. The age of the timber also means it is harder, stronger and more stable than newly harvested Douglas Fir. The reclaimed timbers are environmentally friendly as well as individual characteristic running throughout each plank such as bolt and nail holes which makes each piece of timber truly unique.

The Technical Bits

All of our Douglas Fir flooring is manufactured on site in our Yorkshire workshops. This gives us maximum control when producing your floor. The majority of or collection is finished with a raw lacquer, giving the flooring an unfinished and natural look. A lacquer sits on top of the wood surface providing protection, yet is low maintenance.

The Reclaimed Douglas Fir Flooring collection is all priced as an engineered product. The Douglas Fir is machined to 6mm(+/-0.5mm) and then engineered on to a 15mm birch plywood. This creates an extremely stable product, making it suitable to use with under floor heating systems. That said, if you require your flooring to be solid, this can be accommodated.

With all reclaimed products, no two pieces are the same. This means that each board length can vary. On average the boards are 1600mm, but please bear in mind they can be anywhere from 400mm up to 2450mm.

Please note that our flooring is a natural product. The colour, grain knots and markings will vary from batch to batch, as well as from one plank to another. This makes our flooring a truly unique natural product.

The Oyster Bar – Reclaimed Wood and Aged Copper

Welcome to the Wild Rock Oyster Bar, the professional bar that moves. Follow their journey here @wildrockoysterbar

From weddings to festivals you will find this bespoke oyster bar (designed & made by us!) travelling around the country.

We were thrilled to be brought on board for this project. Our client Natalie’s wish was to create a bar that followed her dreams and unique style. This evolved in to a cool jazzy bar, ready and waiting to serve oysters paired with the finest champagne and wine.

At the Main Company we love bringing people together to celebrate, with events held in our showroom in York, and our annual visit to the Yorkshire Show. And this is what we helped the Oyster bar achieve – a social, innovative bar that is adaptable to all kinds of parties and social circles.

So how did we keep things easy and portable for our oyster client? We added wheels! And built it as three sections that can be separated, so it can be adapted for each event. An aged copper worktop was combined with rustic reclaimed wood. We rejuvenated the funkiest reclaimed wood, to create a highly textured look and feel to reflect the Oyster bar’s ethos and style.

Suitable for indoor or outdoor. Rustic or classic. Bloody Marys or champagne. Or both!

We are proud to have worked with the Wild Rock Oyster Bar and cannot wait to follow their journey to see where the mobile bar takes them. Did you know that they also offer an Oyster Bloody Mary Bar too?! Serving champagne, Bloody Marys and freshly shucked oysters.
