What Is a Bespoke Kitchen? And Are They Worth the Investment

A bespoke kitchen is designed and custom-built for a specific house and way of living. Every cabinet, drawer and worktop starts as a measurement of your room.

Here’s what a ‘bespoke kitchen’ is and why they’re worth the investment.

Bespoke, made-to-measure or off-the-shelf?

There are three types of kitchens on the market, and only one of them is bespoke.

An off-the-shelf kitchen is built from stock units in fixed sizes. You pick from a set catalogue of doors, colours and handles, and a fitter arranges them to fit your walls. It’s the high street model, and there’s nothing wrong with it for what it is.

Made-to-measure sits a step up. The cabinets are still built to standard widths, but a company will adjust panel sizes, add filler pieces and let you choose from a fixed set of finishes. It looks a little more tailored, but the underlying structure hasn’t changed.

A bespoke kitchen skips both of those starting points. Every unit is designed around your kitchen’s dimensions, including the unique and awkward parts. Storage also gets built around what you own. If you want a cupboard that’s exactly deep enough for your mixer and nothing more, that’s the kind of detail a bespoke process makes possible.

Why it’s worth the extra thought

The easy answer is how it fits. Most houses, especially older ones, don’t have perfectly square walls or standard-height ceilings. A kitchen built to exact measurements uses every inch of a room instead of working around the compromises forced on you.

But the biggest reason is what the kitchen is made from and how long it lasts. Solid wood cabinetry, built by hand, can be repaired, refinished, and adjusted years later instead of being replaced.

There’s also the simple fact that a bespoke kitchen can look however you like. A shaker door in a painted finish, a farmhouse layout built around a reclaimed oak table, a sleek contemporary run with hidden storage behind flush panelling. The design isn’t limited to what a factory line can produce.

What the process looks like

At Main, the process starts with a conversation, not a catalogue. We want to understand how your kitchen will be used before a single cabinet gets drawn; who cooks, how often you host and whether you need extra storage space for the family.

From there, our designers put together a full plan covering layout, materials, finishes and appliances, and refine it with you stage by stage. Every kitchen is then handmade in our Yorkshire workshop, where we’ve been working with solid wood and reclaimed timber for over forty years.

We’d always encourage a visit, either to our Yorkshire workshop or our London showroom, so you can see the materials and finishes in person before committing to anything.

Practical considerations before you commit

There are some considerations to take into account. A bespoke kitchen can take longer to be built than simply picking units off a shelf, and it’s worth planning around that. Design alone can take several weeks, since every layout is drawn from scratch and refined with you rather than being pulled from a template.

Once the design is signed off, handmade cabinetry in solid wood takes time to build properly, and a full kitchen typically takes up to several months from first sketch to final fit. You’re not just picking a door colour from a swatch; you’re deciding on cabinet depths, drawer configurations, worktop materials and how everything sits against services like plumbing and electrics.

It’s a more involved process than a standard kitchen fit, and the trade-off for that involvement is a kitchen that’s actually built around how you live.

Is it worth the cost?

Bespoke kitchens cost more than stock or made-to-measure alternatives, and it’s worth being upfront about that. You’re paying for design time, hand craftsmanship and materials that aren’t bought in bulk from a supplier catalogue.

What that buys you is a kitchen that fits your space perfectly, uses storage the way you live and is built to be repaired rather than replaced when something eventually needs attention. For a room that most households use every single day, that’s an investment worth the cost.

There’s also a longer-term financial case worth making. A well-fitted kitchen is consistently one of the rooms that matters most to house buyers, and a bespoke kitchen doesn’t date the way a mass-produced one does, since it can be repainted, refinished or adjusted rather than ripped out. That’s a huge difference when it comes to resale and tends to support a property’s value.

If you’re weighing up whether a bespoke kitchen makes sense for your home, we’d love to talk it through with you. Book a consultation with our team in Yorkshire or London, or download our brochure to see the kind of kitchens we make before you visit.

Top 5: Kitchen Countertops

A kitchen countertop is a key element in the look and feel of a kitchen. Countertops are the surface we prepare our meals on which makes it the surface we see and touch the most in our kitchens. In modern kitchens countertops have also adapted the roles of a breakfast counter, coffee bar, work space and so on. Given the high utility of this surface it is important to pick the right material with some or most of these features: durable, heat resistant, scratch proof, visually pleasing, and easy to clean.

From our experience designing bespoke kitchens we have shortlisted the top 5 countertop materials

Composite

A composite worktop is made from two or more materials combined together, this results in a more durable and versatile material. Composite is the most commonly found finish due to it’s numerous advantages and variety of colours and textures.

Composite Worktops have two main types: Quartz-based and solid surface. Quartz-based composites are engineered using natural quartz crystals that are bonded together with resin. Solid surface composites are produced using a man-made acrylic or polyester material. Both types of composites offer the same benefits: Hardwearing, consistent, non-porous, and repairable.

In our Bespoke Kitchen Project 31 – Essex we used a composite countertop, it created the perfect contrast to the brightly painted cabinets.

Concrete

Looking for a minimal kitchen? look no further! Concrete countertops are getting very popular in residential kitchens for their functionality and aesthetic appeal, additionally they are inherently durable as well as easy to clean and maintain. Some of the advantages of concrete are, durability, versatility, and scratch resistance (in comparison to other materials).

We have used a concrete countertop in our Bespoke Kitchen Project 34 – Whitechapel. The combination of concrete, bricks and brass create the perfect balance in this space.

Metal

Metal counters are the perfect star piece in a kitchen. Depending on which finish you pick it can create varied looks. We have worked on a number of projects with metal countertops, as shown above in our Bespoke Kitchen Project 30 – Greenwich.

The most common types of metal countertops are; Stainless steel, Copper, Bronze, and Aluminium. Each of these metals create a unique look depending on the theme of the kitchen. Some of the over arching advantages for metal countertops are: Durability, some have antibacterial properties, some would produce a beautiful patina over time, corrosion resistant, recyclable, and easy to maintain.

Natural Stone

A traditional and popular choice is natural stone . Granite, Marble, Onyx, and Dolomite are some of the most used natural stones for countertops. Natural stone is the definition of luxury in a kitchen, these stunning counters are quite high in price and very high maintenance. However, they create a luxurious look and feel for your kitchen and are available in an extensive colour palette! Natural stones are durable, and scratch and heat resistant making them exceptionally useful in our industry.

Natural stones have their own distinct patterns, colour swirls, and luminous flecks. Their inherently unique characteristics become part of your kitchen when you select a natural stone for your countertop.

We have used a natural stone countertop in our Bespoke Kitchen Project 5 – Harrogate. The granite used benefits from a plum coloured fleck, working perfectly with the plum coloured cabinets.

Wood

Wooden countertops have been a staple in kitchens for decades. The variety of wood available ensures it can be used no matter what the theme of the kitchen is. Wood is a durable material, and easy to fix if maintained properly making it an excellent choice for a countertop. Wood goes well with majority of colours and kitchen styles and we love a classic wooden countertop at The Main Company! We have used wooden countertops in several projects, shown above is one of our favourite wooden countertops in our Bespoke Kitchen Project 19 – Wighill.

Why Reclaimed Wood Flooring is the Perfect Choice for Commercial Interiors

Setting up a commercial space is not an easy task. It takes a lot of consideration and planning. Nowadays, there are so many options available that it can be hard to decide what to choose. If you’re contemplating which way to go, you should consider reclaimed wood flooring as it offers many benefits.  It can make your space look more attractive and unique, which will definitely draw more customers. Each piece of reclaimed wood has its own history and adds a character to your design. If you’re wondering whether reclaimed wood flooring is a suitable choice for commercial interiors, here are a few things you should consider.

Aesthetic Appeal

When it comes to commercial spaces, it is essential to stand out. Reclaimed wood flooring is available in limited quantities. Every plank has a story to tell. Each one has been salvaged from a variety of interesting buildings, including Old Textile Mills, European Barns, and historic buildings. This backstory guarantees that you get a one-of-a-kind interior that is memorable and leaves an instant impression. The Main Company’s beautiful wood can be found in many places, including shop fits, bars and restaurants. We have worked with a wide range of brands, including Nando’s, Belstaff, Tonkotsu, Peter Lik and Cripps, to name a few. Our product is truly unique, as there are no two pieces of reclaimed wood that are the same.

Durability and Longevity

High-quality reclaimed wood flooring not only offers visual appeal and authentic looks but is also a durable option. Considering the fact that commercial spaces have to endure regular traffic, you need a reliable solution that can withstand all the pressure. The Main Company provides engineered reclaimed wood, which further enhances the stability of your flooring. The engineering process involves cutting lamellas from old oak and cold pressing them to sustainable birch plywood, resulting in increased stability and durability, perfect for any environment. While solid reclaimed timber offers traditional aesthetics, our engineered reclaimed wood provides added stability, making it compatible with underfloor heating and ensuring long-lasting durability.

Practical Considerations

One of the first things you must consider when decorating the interior of your office is how easy it is to clean. You wouldn’t want to spend hours mopping and sweeping the floors. Reclaimed wood flooring can be a practical decision in this aspect, too. We offer a variety of designs that are stunning and easy to maintain. Reclaimed wood quickly catches your eye if you are attracted to vintage looks, but it can suit every space, modern or Victorian. From Weathered Barn Oak to traditional and rustic pine, we provide a wide range of finishes to complement a variety of spaces to suit your personal style. Reclaimed Wood Flooring can be configured and customised in a number of ways to suit your environment. Environmental Benefits

Nowadays, more and more people are becoming aware of the environmental challenges we are facing. This outlook is reflected in interior design trends as well. One of the reasons why the popularity of reclaimed wood flooring has grown in recent years is due to its eco-friendliness. By repurposing existing wood, we can reduce the need for new timber and help to preserve forests. On top of that, salvaging wood from old buildings also minimises waste, which can be a great help to the environment. Sustainable and Stylish Choices for Your Home

History has proven to us that if we want our future generations to live happy lives, we need to take sustainable practices seriously. Some of the top current ecological challenges that might worsen in the future include climate change, deforestation, loss of biodiversity and pollution, and this is just a short list. For this reason, we must adapt our lifestyles and make green choices. The Main Company helps you set up your interior with eco-friendly solutions. How? Here are a few ideas to keep in mind when decorating if you want to go green.

Combining Style and Sustainability

Combining style and sustainability is entirely possible. Your home can look fabulous while embracing eco-friendly solutions. Many people mistakenly believe that using reclaimed products produces a shabby appearance, but this is just a myth. Modern technologies allow us to give these materials a new life without wasting additional resources. With thoughtful design and intricate craftsmanship, reclaimed items can add unique character and sophistication to your space. Read our previous blog – Combining Reclaimed Wood Flooring with Modern Home Technology, to get an idea of how this can be achieved in real life. All our projects are proof of that.

Reclaimed Engineered Wood Flooring

Choosing an eco-friendly flooring solution can have a significant impact on the environment. Traditional parquet and planks often result in excessive wood waste. Naturally, it contributes to deforestation and climate change. Reclaimed wood flooring, however, is a sustainable choice that helps prevent these issues. The Main Company offers the highest quality, unique Reclaimed Wood Flooring. Each plank is meticulously handcrafted and restored by our experts. We celebrate the natural beauty of wood and try to preserve its charm and character. With over 40 years of expertise, The Main Company specialises in engineering reclaimed and rustic wood to perfection. The engineering process further enhances the stability of reclaimed wood. Engineered wood flooring is produced by cutting lamellas from old oak and cold pressing them to sustainable birch plywood. As a result, you get stable and durable flooring that is perfect for any environment.

Reclaimed and Ex-Display Kitchens

Another sustainable solution offered by The Main Company is our stylish reclaimed and ex-display kitchens. Kitchen waste is a significant problem. As homeowners renovate, many perfectly good cabinets and materials end up in landfills. Reclaimed kitchens address this challenge by giving these pieces a second chance. Here at The Main Company, reclaimed materials are at the heart of what we do. Our experts salvage the very best raw, rustic materials that we then use to create cladding, flooring and bespoke kitchens. It doesn’t just end at wood. We also work with concrete and metal.

Why Sustainable Choices Matter

Sustainability is the key to preserving our planet and natural resources. Sustainable practices will reduce pollution and protect plant and animal habitats. When businesses follow this path, it creates a ripple effect, encouraging individuals and communities to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. That is why The Main Company tries to adapt these practices to interior design. By reflecting these principles in every aspect of our lives, we can contribute to a better quality of life.

Final Thoughts

Contrary to the myth that sustainability somehow undermines visual appeal, as you can see, it is entirely possible to combine eco-friendly solutions with stylish designs. By choosing eco-friendly options like reclaimed wood flooring and ex-display kitchens, you make a positive impact on the environment. Embracing these practices helps reduce waste, conserve resources, and support a more sustainable future. At The Main Company, we are dedicated to helping you achieve a balance between aesthetic appeal and environmental responsibility. Our projects demonstrate that these two actually can go hand in hand. Making these thoughtful choices today will benefit both your home and the world for generations to come.

Common Myths About Ex-Display Kitchens Debunked

Ex-display kitchens are one of the most compelling alternatives for homeowners. They’re opportunities to bring your dream kitchen to life at an unbeatable value. These kitchens, originally showcased in our showroom displays, offer a unique chance to acquire high-quality, often premium-grade designs at significantly discounted prices. Despite these advantages, there remains to be a widespread misconception about ex-display kitchens. Today, we will dispel these myths and reveal the truth. Let’s discuss why these models continue to be a preferred choice for savvy homeowners seeking both value and aesthetic appeal.

Ex-Display Kitchens are Poor Quality

There is a common misconception that ex-display kitchens are of poor quality. It probably comes from the belief that showroom models are worn-out or subpar. In truth, showrooms carefully curate their displays to showcase high-quality products that highlight the best features of a kitchen design. With a range of designs, materials, and colour palettes to choose from, each ex-display kitchen is meticulously crafted to reflect luxury and functionality. All of our kitchens are handmade at our family-run Yorkshire workshop, using hand-sourced, high-quality, and durable materials, such as reclaimed wood for engineered flooring, wood cladding on internal walls, as well as external, etc. Far from being inferior, ex-display kitchens offer homeowners an opportunity to acquire luxurious, well-crafted kitchen solutions at a fraction of their original cost. We welcome you to visit our showroom and explore our ex-kitchens collection firsthand.

Ex-Display Kitchens are Expensive

Despite the perception that ex-display kitchens come with a high price tag, they are often heavily discounted. These discounts do not reflect a compromise in quality; rather, they present a prime opportunity for savvy buyers to invest in premium kitchen solutions at a reduced cost. We create numerous display kitchens throughout the year with varying designs, materials, and colour palettes. These get updated periodically, which allows you to get a high-end quality kitchen at a reduced price. Limited Customisation Options

Another myth suggests that ex-display kitchens offer limited customisation options. It often leads potential buyers to believe they may not fit their specific space requirements. However, ex-display kitchens are remarkably flexible when it comes to customisation. At The Main Company, we offer extensive options to modify, amend, or adjust any ex-display kitchen to perfectly suit your needs and space dimensions. Whether it’s altering cabinet configurations, adjusting countertop lengths, or integrating new appliances, our team ensures that your kitchen functions seamlessly in your home. Best of all, these modifications are included in the price.

Ex-Display Kitchens are Outdated

There’s a prevailing misconception that ex-display kitchens come in outdated designs. This myth is associated with concerns about style trends and functionality, where buyers worry that showroom models may not reflect current preferences or technological advancements. Contrary to this belief, ex-display kitchens frequently showcase modern designs and innovative features that align with contemporary aesthetics and functional needs. By purchasing current or recently discontinued models, you can capitalise on the latest kitchen trends and technological innovations at a reduced cost.

Final Thoughts

Ex-display kitchens present an exceptional opportunity for homeowners to achieve their dream kitchens without breaking the bank. Far from the myths that suggest poor quality, high costs, limited customisation, or outdated designs, ex-display kitchens offer premium-grade solutions at discounted prices. Showrooms carefully curate these kitchens to showcase high-quality craftsmanship and modern designs, making them a preferred choice for those seeking both value and aesthetic appeal. The first step in planning your bespoke kitchen is setting your priorities straight and understanding your needs and preferences. The Main Company offers a variety of top models that might inspire you, from sleek modern designs to cosy rustic layouts. Read our previous blog – From Concept to Completion: A Case Study of a Bespoke Kitchen Project. It might be useful in setting up a suitable model.

To determine which style suits your home and lifestyle, consider factors such as your cooking habits, the overall aesthetic of your home, and how you envision using the space. For example, if you love hosting dinner parties, a spacious, open-plan kitchen with a large island might be ideal. On the other hand, if you prefer a warm, intimate space, a traditional or rustic kitchen with rich wooden elements and vintage fixtures might be more suitable. Take the time to understand your needs and preferences, and you’ll be able to create your dream kitchen.

Environmentally Friendly Choice

Opting for reclaimed engineered wood flooring isn’t just a design choice—it’s eco-friendly. Reclaiming wood means we’re giving old timber a new life, which helps reduce the demand for new wood and helps preserve our forests.

Reclaimed wood also reduces the carbon footprint of logging and processing new timber. By choosing reclaimed wood, you support sustainable practices and a healthier planet. At The Main Company, we’re committed to these green principles and proud to offer flooring that is as good for the environment as it is for your home.

The Art of Craftsmanship

Creating reclaimed engineered wood flooring is a detailed process that requires skill and precision. Our expert artisans carefully select and prepare each piece of reclaimed wood, cleaning, de-nailing, and kiln-drying to ensure it’s ready for use.

The wood is then engineered by bonding a top layer of reclaimed wood to multiple layers of plywood. This process creates a stable, durable product resistant to warping and moisture, making it suitable for any room in your home.

Our artisans work meticulously to preserve the natural beauty of the wood while meeting modern durability standards. The result is a product that perfectly blends the rustic charm of reclaimed wood with the practicality needed for everyday use.

Upgrade Your Kitchen While Lowering Your Costs with Ex-Display Kitchens

Are you looking for new ideas for your kitchen design? In that case, let us introduce you to an innovative and cost-effective solution. At The Main Company, we have decided to give our display kitchens a new life. We create numerous display kitchens throughout the year with varying designs, materials, and colour palettes. These get updated periodically, which allows you to get a high-end quality kitchen at a reduced price. Ex-display kitchens may be your best chance to get your dream kitchen. It is a reasonable, modern, and once-in-a-lifetime offer that comes with many advantages. Therefore, let’s explore this wonderful option in more detail.

Ex-Display Kitchens vs. Used Kitchens

People sometimes confuse ex-display kitchens with used kitchens. To make sure that we’re on the same page, let’s get this one thing clear. Ex-display kitchens are previously shown as showroom models. They are in excellent condition with minimal wear and tear. You don’t need to worry about its quality as they come with no scratch whatsoever. Used kitchens, on the other hand, are previously installed kitchens. Compared to ex-display kitchens, they might be in a bit of a shabby state. This is the reason why people usually avoid this alternative. Unlike used kitchens, ex-display kitchens guarantee quality and a discount.

Cost-Effectiveness of Ex-Display Kitchens

The budget restraints that prevented you from purchasing your dream kitchen will no longer be a concern. We allow you to buy handmade, high-quality, durable designer kitchens at a fraction of the original price. It is the same design you saw months ago when visiting our showroom, but it is cheaper now. Rather than disposing of it, we decided to give it a new lease of life. Clearly, it’s a chance you should take advantage of. These kitchens don’t require installation by our professionals, and they are sold as-is, so you can also save on installation costs. That is part of the reason why they are affordable.

Additional Benefits of Ex-Display Kitchens

Buying ex-display kitchens has many benefits beyond just economic advantages. One of the main things to consider is a positive ecological footprint. By choosing an ex-display kitchen, you contribute to the well-being of our planet and future generations. Repurposing ex-display kitchens plays a pivotal role in waste reduction. On top of that, ex-display kitchens make your design and selection process a lot quicker since our in-house design team has carefully designed them.

Eco-Friendly Choice

By opting for ex-display kitchens, you can reduce waste and minimise environmental impact. Instead of discarding perfectly functional kitchen units, repurposing gives them new life. Unfortunately, nowadays, there is an alarming rate of kitchen appliances and materials ending up in landfills. It results in pollution and resource depletion, resulting in profound environmental repercussions. Every day, landfills become burdened with non-biodegradable materials, which decompose into harmful greenhouse gases. By giving display kitchens a second life, we can reduce the demand for new production. It is a sustainable and environmentally responsible approach to renovation.

Convenience and Quick Installation

Ex-display kitchens are an excellent option if you need a quick solution. With a quick renovation, you can be done with the place shortly, saving you a great deal of time and effort. Our in-house design team has meticulously crafted these kitchens, so your order will be ready to go immediately. Additionally, they are flexible enough to modify, amend, or adjust to fit your space. We consider your individual preferences and requirements. We are here to make your dreams a reality as quickly as possible.

A Guide to Different Types of Kitchen Designs

Every family’s needs are different, and so are their preferences for kitchen designs. When designing a bespoke kitchen, we must consider those two factors to achieve a flawless end result. Combining clients’ preferences with the size and layout of their kitchens, The Main Company meticulously crafts each bespoke kitchen design to perfection.

Read on as we shed light on five different kitchen designs and find the one that works best for you.

Island Modular

Let’s start with an island modular kitchen design. These kitchen designs offer homeowners flexibility and workflow. The centrepiece, of course, is an island standing independently from the other parts of the kitchen, such as countertops and cabinets. Depending on the size of the room, islands may serve as an additional functional point or one for a family gathering. If we’re working with the smaller size kitchen, we might suggest using the island as an extra countertop for cooking and dining; in other scenarios, for example, our project in Broadfield, where the space is generous enough to accommodate all the necessary utilities within two as well as a dining table in the kitchen units, we might step back from adding practical use to the island and just make it a focal point for small family gatherings, chit-chatting and so on.

Parallel Modular

Usually, parallel modular kitchens comprise two parallel walls for cabinetry and countertops. These kitchens are ideal for narrow spaces. They are designed to make the most of a small area, offering plenty of storage space and efficient workflow. In some cases, if the kitchen layout doesn’t allow a second wall for cabinetry but clients strongly prefer the parallel modular design, we’ll make an island act as a second ‘wall’ to mimic a similar layout. This was precisely the case with our Shad Thames project.

L Shaped Modular

Next, we have one of the kitchen designs that offers various design possibilities. The L-shaped kitchen is formed with two adjacent walls for cabinets and countertops, creating a corner for additional storage space and appliance placement. The ‘legs’ of the L shape can vary in length depending on the size and layout of the kitchen. For that reason, an L-shaped kitchen can work perfectly with both small and large size kitchens. The perfect example showcasing the L-shaped kitchen and its flexibility was the one we designed in Cobham. All rooms in this unusual-style cottage are on different floors, including the kitchen. Given the kitchen’s layout, we went with the L-shaped design that allowed us to add a corner larder at the end of one of the ‘legs’, making the most of the awkward space next to the stairs with built-in drawers and floor-to-ceiling shelving. Additionally, the L-shape ensures flexibility when working in the kitchen. Cooking, for example, is easier because you don’t have to run back and forth between the countertop and cabinets.

U Shaped Modular

These kinds of kitchens comprise three adjacent walls for cabinets, countertops, storage spaces, and more, providing ample workspace across three sides of the kitchen. Ideal for larger spaces, U-shaped kitchens also offer flexibility and unrestricted workflow. This style allows for efficient storage and maximised counter space, making it a perfect solution for many households. Additionally, the U-shaped kitchen provides easier access to the sink, stove, and refrigerator. The U-shaped kitchens work just as well for smaller living spaces if that’s what homeowners are looking for, as was the case with the Chelsea project.

Open Modular

Open modular kitchens are ideal for homeowners looking to combine cooking and entertaining in the same space. These kitchens feature an open-plan layout, integrating them with living or dining areas. One of our projects in Chester offered a perfect opportunity to design a truly open kitchen. Like many others, the homeowners saw the kitchen as a hub for everyday family gatherings and asked for our help bringing this vision to life. We had to eliminate barriers between rooms to create a spacious and airy feel within the kitchen. These kitchens require thorough planning and consideration of design elements; otherwise, we’re left with a room which is far from having spatial harmony and cohesion. We made sure to include plenty of storage for the items needed during cooking, as well as seating areas to encourage family conversations.

We prioritise customer satisfaction and ensure that the kitchen meets the highest standards of craftsmanship and quality.
